Wearing your support for great cancer care

Firefighter's 2017 t-shirtIf you like wearing clothing for a good cause,  you may want to add a new t-shirt to your wardrobe.

Falmouth Fire Department  firefighters Allen Rivera and Dan Lopes have  teamed up once again to design and sell the t-shirts to benefit Clark Cancer Center at Falmouth Hospital. Their plan is to raise more than the $7,280 they donated last year – the first year they sold the shirts – and they are off to a good start.

Rivera and Lopes started selling the t-shirts two weeks ago and already have more than 100 orders.

“The staff at the hospital are so supportive in buying the t-shirts,” said Lopes. “Some of them are cancer survivors and are very appreciative of what we are doing.”

In order to surpass their goal to raise more than last year, the duo will need to sell more t-shirts than the 700-800 they sold last year because the price to make them went up by $2 per shirt.

Falmlouth firefighters t-shirts“The ordering costs of the t-shirts is higher because there are more colors in the design,” said Rivera.

Last year’s t-shirts had the pink theme of breast cancer, while this year’s design encompasses some of the most prevalent cancers on Cape Cod.

“A staff member in the Clark Cancer Center suggested we incorporate all of the cancers into the design,” said Rivera.

It took him quite a few months to complete the new creation and the deep rich colors pay tribute to those fighting cancer. The Maltese cross signifying hope, strength, courage and faith is the central point of the design and is surrounded by a dark lavender ribbon that represents all cancers.

Ivy leaves and butterflies share the color palette of the prevalent cancers with white for lung cancer, light blue for prostate cancer, dark blue representing colon-rectal cancer, pink for breast cancer and green for uterine cancer.

“It took a very long time to design this shirt,” said Rivera. “When I showed the prototype to some of the nurses at Falmouth Hospital, they loved it!” That’s when he knew he had a winner.

The design on the left front pocket area of the shirt is indicative of “all things to do with health,” said Rivera. “The silhouette of a stethoscope is for the nurses because it’s a tool they use every day. And the outline of the heartbeat is life.”

Rivera and Lopes hope the staff in all Falmouth nursing facilities and medical offices wearing the t-shirts by the end of their fundraiser, which will be in mid- September.
